A Guide for The Carriage Club Community
Stepping into a new Pilates studio can feel a little like walking into a secret society. There are machines with springs, leather straps, and a specific vocabulary that can feel intimidating. But don’t sweat it—we’ve got you covered.
To help you feel like a seasoned regular from day one, here is the ultimate guide to Pilates etiquette.
1. The "Golden Rule" of Footwear: Wear Your Grips
In the Pilates world, socks aren't just an accessory—they’re equipment. For safety (no slipping on the wooden standing platform!) and hygiene, most studios require grip socks.

Pro Tip: This is your chance to shine. Showing up in a fresh pair of The Carriage Club socks tells the instructor you’re prepared and serious about your practice.
2. Arrive Early (The "5-Minute" Window)
Try to arrive at least 5 to 10 minutes before the clock starts. This gives you time to stow your bag, change into your grips, and settle onto your mat or reformer. If it’s your first time, arriving early allows the instructor to show you how the springs work so you aren't fumbling mid-flow.
3. Minimize the "Tech" Distractions
Your Pilates hour is a phone-free sanctuary. Most studios ask that you leave your phone in a cubby. If you’re wearing a smartwatch, consider putting it on "Theater Mode" so it doesn't light up the dark room every time you do a Chest Expansion.
4. Respect the "Clean-Down"
At the end of class, it’s standard practice to wipe down your equipment. The studio will provide antibacterial wipes or spray. Be sure to wipe the carriage, the footbar, and the vinyl loops. It’s a quick gesture that keeps the "Club" environment pristine for the next mover.
5. Listen to the Transitions
Pilates is a flow. While it’s tempting to chat with your friend on the next reformer, try to stay tuned into the instructor’s cues. The "magic" of Pilates happens in the transitions between exercises—staying focused ensures you get the full benefit of the workout and keeps the class moving safely.
6. Fragrance-Free is the Way to Go
Because Pilates involves deep, rhythmic breathing in a shared space, many studios appreciate it if you skip the heavy perfume or cologne. Let the only thing people notice be your impeccable form (and your socks, of course).
